It sometimes can hit from 10km range a fly what i personally beeing a max 2 star pilot can´t manage but othertimes it misses every shot, so. 1vs1 dogfights or 50 or 500 ? From my experience, the larger the battle in numbers the more valuable is thrust and speed plus long range high burst like railgun no matter what chassis i went with. IS it heavily depends on about how many fighters we are talking. You can try to stick pulse lasers on one and send it against fighters but for the same price you can buy two Nova or Perseus with shard batteries who'll get into the fight faster, kill the enemies quicker and have a better chance of surviving it while also training up two pilots instead of one.

Where the heavy fighters like the Ares and Eclipse shine is anti-capital and anti-station work with plasma, bomb mortars, muon chargers or torpedoes.Īnything smaller than a P though they'll have trouble with. They do the best against S-class enemies of the M class ships ime, especially if you set their defence drones on escort. If you want something tanky for anti-fighter work i'd suggest Gorgon Vanguards with shards and flak turrets instead. They also have a hard time killing the faster fighters because they spend most of the fight chasing and turning instead of shooting so they're completely unsuitable as interceptors. Originally posted by BigBANGtheory:I would have thought Ares fighters are a good choice They're a good choice as bombers in AI hands, but their slow speed means they get shot to pieces vs any of the faster S-class ships (basically anything that does over 300m/s cruise speed) despite having double the weapons and triple the shields. Novas and Falcons also work quite well but aren't quite as good as the Perseus, though Falcons work better as sector patrol without a carrier since their higher shielding lets them avoid accumulating scratch damage. Three of them ganging up on an enemy will deal easily with everything up to a P and 3-4 wings usually deal with your usual Xenon fighter ball without losses. I've found that speed does a lot more for survivability than shields or hull and you can always bring more of them to make up for the lack of gun slots, but you can't make your Ares or Eclipses not sitting ducks.īut shard batteries do enough damage that only packing two of them hasn't really been a problem and the Perseus speed negates the lower range. Perseus Vanguard with shard batteries in wings of three (two set to attack with commander on the third which is assigned to intercept) are what i use almost exclusively.Īlso Mk 3 PAR shields because their speed means they actually get semi-regular shield regen in combat between passes, mk2 combat engines and thrusters (going mk3 here did not make a notable difference in killing speed or survivability).
